About This Dovahzul Translator

First thing I typed into this Dovahzul translator was the opening of the Skyrim theme, because if it couldn't handle the song every player hums, nothing else mattered. It got it right: Dragonborn, by his honor is sworn. Second thing was the king of the north, and that came back with a hole where north should be. Annoying. Also the point. The tool only knows the 650-odd words Bethesda wrote, checked against UESP's dragon language key, so it shows you a gap rather than making a word up.

Tolkien more your thing? There's an Elvish Translator. For the actual Vikings that Skyrim borrowed its beards from, try the Old Norse Translator.

What Does Fus Ro Dah Mean?

It's force, balance, push, the three words of the Unrelenting Force shout. Every shout in Skyrim works the same way: one to three words of power, each a single syllable. String them together and you've got the move that's launched a million bandits off a million cliffs.

Wikis list the shouts alphabetically, which is no use in the middle of a dragon fight. These are the ones people look up first.

ShoutDovahzulWord by word
Unrelenting ForceFus Ro Dahforce, balance, push
Fire BreathYol Toor Shulfire, inferno, sun
Frost BreathFo Krah Diinfrost, cold, freeze

Call DragonOd Ah Viingsnow, hunter, wing
DisarmZun Haal Viikweapon, hand, defeat
Storm CallStrun Bah Qostorm, wrath, lightning
Marked for DeathKrii Lun Auskill, leech, suffer
Fus Ro Dah broken into its three words of power: fus means force, ro means balance and dah means push, with a note that the dragon alphabet has 34 symbols made of up to three talon scratches and a dewclaw dot.
Odahviing's name hides a shout too: snow, hunter, wing. That's Call Dragon.

How Dovahzul Grammar Works

The plural rule threw me for a minute. You copy the last letter and add an e, so one Elder Scroll is a kel and a stack of them is kelle, double l. My or your adds an i. Something already done gets aan. Long words are small ones glued together, which is why reading a dragon's name before the fight is honestly decent advice.

The translator leaves those endings off. Guessing at them is how other sites end up printing words no dragon ever said, and a gap is better than a fake.

What Broke While I Built It

That north hole was my fault. The dragons have a word for it, and I'd skipped it. So I went back through all 650 entries and added forty-odd everyday words I'd missed, crown and army and mercy among them. I nearly slipped one in myself, too: throat pointed at Monahven for a while, until I remembered that's the mountain's name. The Throat of the World is literally mother wind, and no dragon uses it for anybody's neck.

Goodbye was a judgment call. No dragon ever says bye in the games. The nearest thing is go in peace. That's what you get, flagged as such underneath.

The Dragon Alphabet

Word walls aren't written in Latin letters. Dragons scratch 34 symbols, each made from up to three talon marks and sometimes a dot from the dewclaw, a design Bethesda's team walked Game Informer through back in 2011. You get the words in normal letters here, which is fine for a Discord name. Tattoo plans? Get a real dragon font and check each rune twice, because an artist copying from a screenshot won't spot a missing scratch, and you're the one who'll be wearing it for life.

Dovahzul Translator Questions

How do you say hello in Dovahzul? Drem yol lok, which Paarthurnax says the moment you reach him on the Throat of the World, after that whole climb. Word for word, it's peace, fire, sky.

What does Dovahkiin mean? Dragonborn. Dovah is dragon, kiin is born. The Greybeards shout it at you so loud the whole province hears, so you'll know the word well before the end of the main quest.

How do you say I love you in Dovahzul? Word for word, zu'u ros hi. I went looking for a dragon who says it in the games and came up empty, so treat it as a dictionary build. It'd make a fine ring engraving if your partner plays Skyrim.

Is Dovahzul a real language? Not like Klingon, which has its own institute. Bethesda wrote roughly 650 words across Skyrim and its add-ons, plenty for shouts and names, thin for a chat. Fan sites filled the gaps with inventions, and I've left every one of those out.

What language is the Skyrim theme song in? Dovahzul. Jeremy Soule's Dragonborn theme puts a big choir on it, chanting in dragon tongue. Paste the lyrics into the box and you'll get the English back, line by line.

Can it translate Dovahzul to English? Yes. Paste a shout, a word wall line or the song. Anything outside the official list comes back in angle brackets, so you can see exactly which bit nobody at Bethesda ever wrote. UESP's dragon language page has every source.
