About This High Valyrian Language Translator

Here's how this High Valyrian language translator works, since fans check. There's no AI in it. Every phrase and every word comes out of David J. Peterson's own High Valyrian Dictionary, the one he keeps on his wiki. 2,787 entries, when I counted on 23 October 2026. Not in the list? Then your English word comes back in brackets, not some made-up Valyrian.

What Does Valar Morghulis Mean?

All men must die. Break it down. Valar is mankind, so all men. Morghūlis comes from morghūljagon, to die, in the form that says it has to happen. The answer is Valar dohaeris, all men must serve. Arya gets the first from Jaqen H'ghar and hears the second on a ship to Braavos, and fans have been trading them at bus stops and on the last day of a job they hated ever since.

Notice the line over the u? That's a macron. Hold that vowel a beat longer. HBO's subtitles skip it, so does every phone keyboard I've owned, and so does the tool: valar morghulis typed lazy at midnight still lands on all men must die.

The Bug That Said Alive

Making the macrons optional caused my first real bug. I pasted "rytsas, skorkydoso glaesā?" to test it. That's hello, how are you. What came back was hello, how, alive. Glaesā with the line is you fare. Glaesa without it is alive. Strip the lines and the two collide. Not the greeting anyone wants. Now the spelling you typed wins, and the lines only get dropped when nothing matches, so you fare stays you fare and nobody gets declared alive by accident.

Full sentences work like this. A phrase in the dictionary comes out whole. Anything else comes out as dictionary words in your order. My dragon is strong gives ñuha zaldrīzes sagon kostōba, plus a note that the endings aren't on. Real High Valyrian bends almost every word, so that line would never pass in Meereen. Every word in it is real, though. You can look each one up in Peterson's list before it goes anywhere near a wedding invitation or a forearm.

Translate High Valyrian Phrases, Word by Word

Most phrase lists online copy the show's subtitles and lose the macrons along the way, which is fine for a meme and bad news for anything you plan to ink. These are spelled the way Peterson writes them in his dictionary, so a tattoo artist can copy them letter for letter without guessing where the little lines go.

Moon of my life and my sun and stars are Dothraki pet names, but Peterson put Valyrian versions in the dictionary too. Daenerys says the dragon and slave line in Astapor, right before the slave market learns what drakarys means.

Eight High Valyrian dragon words from Peterson's dictionary: zaldrīzes means dragon, drakarys means dragonfire, zaldrīzāeksio means dragonrider, ynot means come to me, laehossa ynot means pay attention, jagon means move, Dorzālty means the Unburnt, and va ñellyrty perzys means fire made flesh.
Ynot is just "to me" until you shout it at a dragon. Then it means come here.

High Valyrian Words for Family

English gets lazy with family. High Valyrian won't let you just say brother, because you have to pick older or younger before the word even leaves your mouth.

FatherKepa
Older brotherLēkia
Younger brotherValonqar
Older sisterMandia
Younger sisterHāedar

Book readers will know valonqar. Maggy the Frog's prophecy, the one eating at Cersei all through A Feast for Crows. Little brother. That's all it means. Plain brother in the box gets you lēkia, the big one. Writing to the baby of the family? Grab valonqar from the table, unless you'd enjoy a talk about birth order at the next family dinner from someone who's been the youngest for thirty years.

Ñ, Ȳ and That Rolled R

Ñ? The ny in canyon. The y is a vowel, the one in German über, which makes ȳdrā start with your lips pushed out like you're about to whistle. Lines over vowels, hold them. Peterson's j is the y in yes, so jorrāelan opens soft, then the rr rolls like an annoyed cat that's been asked to get off the keyboard one time too many. Want a voice? Duolingo has had a High Valyrian course with audio since 2017. It's the closest thing to a teacher you'll find unless you happen to know someone who spent a summer dubbing Targaryens.

Into Pandora instead of Westeros? The Na'vi Language Translator is built the same way. Klingon? Here's the Klingon Translator. Tolkien fan? Try the Elvish Translator. Every other made-up tongue sits on the translators page. Want to check my words? Peterson's High Valyrian Dictionary has every one.

High Valyrian, Answered

Is High Valyrian a real language? Yes. Constructed, but with full grammar and thousands of words. Martin left a handful of phrases in the books, mostly about dragons and death, which is a fair summary of the plot if you've only got ten seconds. David J. Peterson did the rest, starting with season 3 of Game of Thrones, and he was back writing Targaryen lines for House of the Dragon.

How do you say hello in High Valyrian? Rytsas. Hi, hail, greetings, one word. Good for a queen, fine for a barista.

How do you say I love you in High Valyrian? Avy jorrāelan. Avy is you, the one being loved. Jorrāelan is I love. There's a gentler one too, avy raqan, for liking someone a lot.

What does dracarys mean? Dragonfire. Peterson spells it drakarys, with a k. Shout it at a dragon, you get fire. Shout it at a barbecue, you get looks.

Is High Valyrian hard to learn? Pretty hard. Eight cases. Four genders, and they're lunar, solar, terrestrial and aquatic, so a fish and the moon don't get the same endings. Verbs come after that.

What is the most accurate High Valyrian translator? For phrases? One that copies Peterson's spelling letter for letter, which is what this page does. New sentences are another story. No tool builds those right without guessing, so this one hands you the dictionary words and admits the endings are missing.
