What Is Backwards Text?

It's writing turned around so it reads right to left. Hello? olleH. In the plain styles the letters stay the same and just swap seats. The two mirror styles also trade each letter for one facing the other way, so e turns into ɘ and R into Я.

What Broke While I Built It

My first version flipped text one code point at a time, which is how most reverse text tools I tried still work, and it looked fine until I typed something that wasn't plain English. Then I typed the India flag. Under the hood a flag is two letters, I and N. Swap them and you've got NI, the code for Nicaragua, which is not what you want to send on Independence Day. A brown thumbs-up broke too. Out came a yellow thumb with a brown square stuck on the front.

The fix was to count characters the way your eye does. Flag, emoji, é: one piece each, and each moves as one piece, however many code points it took to build. Your browser does the counting, so an old one might still split a skin tone off.

Backwards Font or Reverse Text?

A backwards font is the look where each letter faces the wrong way, like Я in place of R. Unicode doesn't have a full mirrored alphabet, so I've borrowed the closest lookalike for every letter. ꟼ for P is spot on. The k is a near miss, and I'm still annoyed about it. o, x and l don't need a twin, since they're symmetrical already.
