About This A1Z26 Translator

This A1Z26 cipher translator does one job. Numbers go in and letters come out, or the other way round. Got a line of dashes off the Gravity Falls credits, or a note from a kid who thinks you can't read it? Paste it. Words go in the same box and come out numbered, ready for a napkin.

What Is the A1Z26 Cipher?

It's the plainest code going. Letter, position, done. A is 1 and Z is 26, so the name is the whole manual. No key. Nothing to remember past your ABCs.

How Do You Decode A1Z26?

Paste it in. Dashes glue a word together. A gap ends it. So 8-5-12-12-15 is a single word. By hand? Count along the chart, and you'll know by the third word why people use a box.

Spaces gave me the only real design call. Does a space mean next letter or next word? One dash anywhere in your paste, and spaces end words. No dashes, and they end letters, which is why 8 5 12 12 15 still reads hello. A slash or a double space splits the words there.

Why Is It in Gravity Falls?

The show hid coded lines in its end credits, with A1Z26 taking its turn after Caesar and Atbash. Fans paused every episode to crack them, and a full list of those lines has been passed around online for years, which saves you the pausing but kills the fun. Stuck with nonsense after decoding? Some puzzles stack a Caesar shift on top. That's most of why anyone searches for this code by name today, since teachers mostly just call it letter numbers.

What Breaks It

Digits, mostly. Hi 2 u came back from my test as hi b u. Real 2, coded 2, no difference. Two, not 2.

Over 26? There's no such letter, so it'll sit in square brackets, ugly on purpose. Commas stay put. One stray letter flips the box to encoding. Strip labels first.

Capitals can't survive. A number can't remember one, so Gravity Falls comes back lowercase. Accented letters have no number, and they sit among your digits like a pebble in a shoe. As a last check I ran every letter through both ways, and all 26 came home as themselves, which is the least you'd want from a tool this simple.

Is It a Good Code for Real Secrets?

No. A ten-year-old with this page beats it, and common letters give it away on sight, since 5 turns up everywhere. It's a classroom toy. A treasure hunt clue. A birthday card that sends grandpa hunting for his glasses. Want a shade more trouble? Run your message through the Caesar Cipher Translator first, then turn that into numbers, and whoever cracks it has earned the prize.

Teachers like this one for a reason. It sneaks in alphabet order and counting at the same time, and a class of seven-year-olds will decode a sentence on the board faster than you can write it, mostly because the first kid to finish gets to pick the next message. I'd put the chart on a whiteboard, read a message out in numbers and let the kids race, because a spelling list never once made a seven-year-old beg for one more round. Spies, on the other hand, never had much use for it.

Other codes? Tap it out with the Morse Code Translator. The whole shelf sits on the translators page, and there's a neat write-up of letter swaps in Wikipedia's substitution cipher article.

A1Z26 Questions, Answered

What is the A1Z26 cipher? Letters as numbers. A is 1, Z is 26, and the ones between aren't hard to guess.

How does the A1Z26 cipher work? Position in the alphabet. H is eighth, so H is 8. Counted on your fingers just now, didn't you?

What does 8-5-12-12-15 mean? Hello. Everybody encodes it first. I did too, and it's still the best test word.

Is A1Z26 a cipher or a code? Cipher, strictly. It swaps letters and leaves whole words alone, and nobody at a kids' party will check.

How do you write a space in A1Z26? Leave a gap between dashed words. Spaced-out numbers need a slash or a double space, or the words will run together.

Did Gravity Falls invent A1Z26? No. Numbering the alphabet is far older, and no single inventor is known. The show just made the name famous.
