About This Cat Translator
A cat owner can hear the food meow from the shut-door meow two rooms away. Phones can't, not reliably. So this cat translator sticks to what holds up. English in, meow code out, one cat sound per letter, and it reverses when you paste it back. Or describe the cat. Purring? Kneading? Slow blink at 3 a.m.? You'll get the usual meaning.
Sillier stuff lives next door: banana talk on the Minion Translator, playground code on the Gibberish Translator.
Can You Really Translate What Your Cat Is Saying?
Partly. Meows have no dictionary. Purrs, hisses and tails do, more or less, since vets and behaviour researchers mostly agree on them, so that's what this page reads. A tail straight up means hello in a flat in Leeds or a farmhouse in Ohio. A meow is the odd one out. Each cat builds its own set of them for its own people, which is why the neighbour's cat is so hard to read.
| Your cat does this | It usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Meows at you | A request: food, a door, attention | Check the bowl first |
| Purrs | Content, though cats purr when hurt too | Look at the rest of the body |
| Trills | Hello, often with "follow me" | Follow it |
| Chatters at the window | Excited by prey it can't reach | Nothing, enjoy the show |
| Hisses | Scared, warning you off | Give it space |
| Growls | A stronger warning | Back away |
| Yowls | Mating call, distress or pain | Vet, if it keeps going |
| Slow blinks | Trust | Slow blink back |
| Kneads | Feels safe, a kitten habit | Put a blanket between you and the claws |
| Bumps its head on you | Marking you with its scent | Take the compliment |
| Holds its tail straight up | Friendly and confident | Say hi |
| Puffs its tail | Frightened | Remove whatever scared it |
| Flattens its ears | Scared or angry | Leave it alone |
| Shows its belly | Trust, not always a rub request | Rub at your own risk |
How Meow Code Works
Every letter gets one cat sound, and the letters in a word are joined with dashes. I love you comes out as Prr mrow-mao-blep-mew brrp-mao-mowr. E is just mew. I is prr. Short sounds went to common letters, which is Morse's old trick for saving time on the wire. Capitals survive, and so do numbers and commas, which matters when the message is a party date and every guest is reading it in meows.
It's a code, not cat language. Your cat won't understand it, and it isn't trying to. Your friend with this page open will, and that's the fun part.
Where Meow Code Comes In Handy
Pet birthday cards, mostly. Happy birthday Luna in meow code fills a card nicely, and whoever opens it has to come back here to read it. Kids like it for notes, since it looks like pure nonsense to a nosy little brother who'd otherwise read every word of it out loud at dinner. One warning: it gets long fast. Every letter turns into a whole sound, so a short text can blow past a box limit, and a Discord nickname runs out of room after about six letters.
What Broke While I Built It
Meow is two things on this page: the letter a, and a real cat sound. So the first time I tested "a b c" in code, it came back as a little lecture about why cats meow. Now a single bare sound gets the meaning, and two or more code sounds in a row get decoded, so a message that happens to start with the letter a still comes back as words.
"My cat brings me dead mice" got turned into meow code instead of an answer. The rule knew mouse but not mice. Plurals are sneaky like that, and I'd bet plenty of cat owners type exactly that sentence, usually right after stepping on one.
Cat Translator Questions
How do I translate English to cat? Type your words in the box and each letter turns into a cat sound, with dashes between the letters of a word. Then it's yours to send, print or stick on the fridge.
How do I turn meow code back into English? Same box, no switch. Dashes give it away as code, and every sound flips back to its letter, capitals included.
Is there a real cat translator app? There are apps that listen to a meow and guess a label like hungry or happy. They learn your one cat over time, and that's the honest approach, since meows differ so much from cat to cat. Full sentences, though? Not from any of them, whatever the app store screenshots suggest.
What does it mean when my cat slow blinks at me? Trust. A 2020 study from the University of Sussex found cats slow blink back at owners who slow blink at them first, and they're more likely to walk up to a stranger who does it.
Why does my cat meow at me but not at other cats? Cats barely bother meowing at each other once they're grown. They hiss, growl and use their bodies instead. The meow is mostly a kitten sound that grown cats keep for humans, because it works on us.
What is lolcat? The cat-speak of 2000s memes, like "I can has cheezburger?", from the site that started in 2007. It's broken English on purpose, not a code, so this page sticks to meows. Wikipedia's page on cat communication covers the real sounds in more depth.
