Gen Z Slang Words and What They Mean
Try the Gen Z / Brainrot Translator Turn plain English into skibidi-level brainrot slangHalf the Gen Z slang lists out there still teach "on fleek." Come on. That word peaked on Vine. This one goes by what people actually say in 2026, and the dead words get a little graveyard near the bottom.
Who counts? Anyone born 1997 to 2012, if you go with Pew Research. So a 29-year-old accountant and a sophomore with a camera roll full of Roblox screenshots are technically the same generation, and they'll fight about "slay" at Thanksgiving.
What Is the Most Used Gen Z Slang Right Now?
Cooked, aura, no cap, fr, mid, rizz, delulu, lowkey, bet, ate, slay and it's giving, roughly in that order if you scroll any comment section for ten minutes. Learn those twelve and you can follow most group chats. The rest of this page is the long tail, sorted by what you're trying to say instead of A to Z, because nobody needs "ate" filed next to "aura."
Gen Z Slang Words for When Something Is Good
Seventeen ways to say "good." The bad list is exactly as long, which feels right for the internet.

|---|---|---|
| Slay | Did great, looked great | "You slayed that presentation." |
| Ate / ate and left no crumbs | Did it perfectly | "Her fit? Ate." |
| It's giving | It has the vibe of | "This kitchen is giving grandma's house." |

Teachers ask about "aura" more than anything else here. Trip over your own backpack in the hallway and somebody yells "minus 500 aura." Stay chill when the fire alarm goes off mid-test? Plus 1,000.

"Cooked" is the big one for 2025 and 2026. It means done for, and it covers anything: your phone at 2% battery, or the team that's down by 30 in the fourth quarter.
Gen Z Phrases for Telling the Truth, or Calling Out a Lie
A lot of Gen Z slang is just ways to say "I'm serious" or "you're lying."
| Phrase | What it means |
|---|---|
| No cap | No lie, for real |
| Cap / capping | A lie, lying |
| Fr / fr fr | For real (twice means very real) |
| On God / ong | I swear |
| Deadass | Seriously |
| Bet | Okay, deal, I'm in |
| Say less | Got it, you don't need to explain |
| Period / periodt | End of discussion |
| Real | I agree, that's true |
| Lowkey | A little, or quietly |
| Highkey | A lot, openly |
| Clock it / clocked | Notice, call out |
| Iykyk | If you know, you know |
| It's the ___ for me | That one detail is the problem (or the best part) |
| Finna | Going to, about to |
"Clock it" comes straight out of ballroom culture. Now people clock it when a friend says they're "fine" in a voice that's clearly not fine.
Dating and Friend Words
Gen Z has lots of names for the in-between stages of dating. Those stages now last about eight months.
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Rizz | Charm, flirting skill |
| Talking stage | Texting a lot, not dating yet |
| Situationship | More than friends, less than dating |
| Ghosting | Stopping all replies with no warning |
| Breadcrumbing | Sending tiny bits of attention to keep someone hooked |
| Soft launch | Hinting at a partner online (a hand in a photo) |
| Hard launch | Posting the partner's face. It's official. |
| Red flag / green flag | A bad sign / a good sign |
| Beige flag | A weird quirk, not good or bad |
| Simp | Someone who tries way too hard for a crush |
| Pookie | Cute pet name |
| Bestie | Best friend, or anyone you like |
| Twin | Close friend |
| Opp | An enemy, the other side |
| Unc | An older guy, or anyone acting old |
| Glazing | Praising someone way too much |
| Yapping | Talking too much |
"Unc" hurts most. Say "back in my day" once and a 19-year-old will call you unc. You can be 26.
Gen Z Text Abbreviations
Plenty of these are older than Gen Z. Millennials typed "smh" on BlackBerry keyboards. Gen Z dropped the capitals and the periods, and now every message reads colder.
| Text | Stands for |
|---|---|
| fr | For real |
| ong | On God |
| ngl | Not gonna lie |
| icl | I can't lie |
| istg | I swear to God |
| tbh | To be honest |
| bffr | Be (very) for real |
| iykyk | If you know, you know |
| wdym | What do you mean |
| hbu | How about you |
| sm | So much |
| rn | Right now |
| lmk | Let me know |
| imo | In my opinion |
| smh | Shaking my head |
One warning for parents: "k" with a period is not a yes. Nobody under 30 has ever meant "k." kindly.

Want to go the other way, from plain English into all of this? Paste a sentence into the Gen Z Brainrot Translator and it'll stuff it with slay and no cap. It overdoes it on purpose, since real texts use one slang word, two if someone's excited.
Which Gen Z Slang Is Dead Now?
On fleek, bae, YOLO, lit, squad goals, savage, adulting and "I can't even." You'll hear them only as a joke. Lit ruled 2016 and now mostly lives on birthday cards for 40-year-olds.
"Cheugy" is my favorite dead word, because it meant "trying too hard and out of date," went viral in 2021, and within a year the word itself was cheugy.
Where Does Gen Z Slang Come From?
Mostly from Black American English, then from the ballroom scene, fandoms, gaming and streams. TikTok doesn't invent most of it, it just moves it around faster than anything that came before.
"Slay," "ate," "mother," "it's giving" and "clock it" were all ballroom words long before TikTok. Ballroom here means the Black and Latino queer drag balls of 1980s New York, which most people met through the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning. Atlanta rap had "no cap" all over it by 2017 or so. "Rizz" got huge after Twitch streamer Kai Cenat kept saying it, and "sus" spread through the game Among Us in 2020. "Delulu" started in K-pop fan circles.
Is Gen Z slang just AAVE, then? A big share of it is, and it's fair to say so out loud. NPC and W are gamer talk, though, and stan comes from an Eminem song from 2000. So the honest answer is "a lot of it, not all of it," and giving credit costs nothing.
Gen Z Slang vs Gen Alpha Slang
Gen Alpha is the group after Gen Z, kids born from about 2013 on. Their slang is louder and stranger: skibidi, sigma, Ohio, fanum tax and 6 7. Gen Z hears those and feels old.
My rule of thumb: Gen Z words mean something. Gen Alpha words mean nothing on purpose. Our guide to what 6 7 means proves it, and the Gen Alpha Translator does the full skibidi version. The Gen Z vs Millennial slang quiz is there if you want to test yourself, and the brainrot quiz rates how far gone you are.
Is Gen Z Slang in the Dictionary?
Yes, more of it every year. Oxford named "rizz" its Word of the Year for 2023 and "brain rot" for 2024, while Collins picked "brat" in 2024 after the Charli XCX album. Dictionary.com picked "demure" in 2024, then "6-7" in 2025. In August 2025, Cambridge added "skibidi" and "delulu" to its online dictionary.
Gen Z Slang Questions People Ask
What does Gen Z stand for? Generation Z. Gen X got its name from Douglas Coupland's 1991 novel, millennials were briefly "Gen Y," and then somebody just kept going down the alphabet until it ran out.
What does Gen Z call millennials? Nothing official. Older guys get "unc." Mostly it's jokes about side parts, skinny jeans and that half-second pause before a millennial starts talking on camera.
Is Gen Z slang a dialect? No. Slang swaps words. A dialect changes grammar and sounds too, like Scots does. You could speak perfect Gen Z in a BBC newsreader voice.
How do you learn Gen Z slang? Mostly by listening. Grab the twelve from the top, lurk in a few comment sections for a month, and see which ones stick around.
Should adults use Gen Z slang? Once, maybe, totally deadpan. Parents saying a word is how slang dies, so save it for the moment it'll hurt most.
