About This Caveman Translator
ME WANT SIMPLE WORDS. UGH. That is caveman speak in one line, and the whole style fits in three rules: short words, no filler, everything in capitals.
This free caveman translator takes a normal sentence, throws out every word that is only doing grammar work, and shouts back what is left.
Why Do Cavemen Talk Like This?
They did not. That needs saying up front.
The grunting cave dweller is a movie invention, not a record of how anyone ever spoke. Wikipedia's page on the caveman trope traces it to books, comics, and films from the early 1900s. It stuck around because the joke lands in about one second, and a joke that fast never really goes out of style.
The joke works because it cuts language to the bone. No a. No the. No is or will. Just a noun, a verb, and a feeling. ME HUNGRY says the whole thing.
How This Tool Works
Three passes, then the shouting.
First it deletes the words that carry no weight on their own, so out go a, an, the, is, are, will, can, to, and please.
Then it swaps a handful of words for caveman ones. Friend turns into FRIEND-ROCK. House and home both turn into CAVE. Food turns into GRUB. Yes turns into UGH-UGH. My and I both become ME, which is why every caveman sentence ends up sounding so self-centered.
Then the whole line goes to capitals.
The UGH Rule Nobody Expects
Here is the quirk worth knowing. The UGH only gets added if your sentence ends with a full stop, a question mark, or an exclamation mark.
Type I am going to the store with no full stop at the end and you get back ME GOING STORE. Add the full stop and you get ME GOING STORE UGH!
So punctuation is the volume knob. Leave it off for a flat grunt. Put it on for a proper shout.
A Quirk That Turned Out Funnier
Type I do not want to go home. and the output is ME GRR WANT GO CAVE UGH!
The word not never makes it through, because do not gets folded into no, and then no gets swapped again for GRR. So the caveman never says no. He growls.

Where People Use Caveman Speak
Memes. A normal complaint cut down to four shouted words is funnier than the complaint ever was.
Costume parties. Worth running a few lines through the box before you turn up at the door wearing a fur costume.
Comedy writing. Cartoon scripts and sketch shows have leaned on this exact speech pattern for about a hundred years now.
More voices. Try the Pirate Speak Translator or the Yoda Translator for two more characters built out of broken grammar.
Common Questions
Is the caveman translator free? Yes. No account, no fee.
Is this how people really spoke? No. It is a movie trope, and nobody actually knows what human speech sounded like that far back in time.
Does copy and paste work? Yes. The output is plain capital letters.
Does it work on a phone? Yes. The boxes stack when the screen gets narrow.
Why did my UGH go missing? Your sentence had no full stop at the end, so add one and the UGH comes straight back.
Why is it all capitals? Because a caveman does not have an indoor voice.
Feed It Something Long
The fun of this one is the size of the drop. Paste in a work email or a clause from a phone contract and watch forty careful words fall out the other side as six. ME SEND EMAIL UGH! More voices sit on our translators page.
