About This Valley Girl Translator

Feed this Valley Girl translator something gloomy like "the cafeteria food today was really disgusting" and it hands back "The cafeteria food today was like, totally grody, ugh, seriously?" Same complaint. Way more mall energy.

I fell for it on a traffic moan. "Ugh, this traffic is like sooo grody, I'm totally gonna be late again, for sure?" That last question mark is doing a lot of work, and it's the most Valley thing on the page.

What Is a Valley Girl?

It's the bubbly teen from 1980s LA, or more exactly the San Fernando Valley. She said "like" every third word and "gag me with a spoon" at anything gross. Half joke, half real speech, and bits of it leaked into how the whole of America talks.

Blame Frank Zappa. In 1982 he got his 14-year-old daughter Moon into the studio, and she riffed in the voice of the kids she'd heard at the Sherman Oaks Galleria mall. That song, "Valley Girl," turned out to be the biggest US hit he ever had, which must have bugged him a bit.

Moon later said she made up "gag me with a spoon" herself. Grody to the max she picked up around school. The Valley girl page on Wikipedia has the rest, including the 1983 movie with a very young Nicolas Cage.

Valley Girl slang timeline. 1982: Frank and Moon Zappa release the song Valley Girl, with gag me with a spoon and grody to the max. 1983: the Valley Girl movie with a young Nicolas Cage, with like, totally and fer sure. 1995: Clueless and Cher Horowitz, with As if. 2010s: the internet, with I can't even.

How Does a Valley Girl Talk?

Three sounds give it away. "Like" turns up everywhere, even doing the job of "said" ("so she's like, no way"). Plain lines curl up at the end like a question, and that's uptalk. Then the last word sinks into a low, creaky rattle, which goes by the gloriously unglamorous name vocal fry.

Clueless kept the whole thing alive in the 90s. Cher's "As if!" did more for the slang than any textbook ever could.

How Does It Work?

An AI rewrites your text from a short list of real Valley slang. My one non-negotiable: your facts stay put. Friday at 2pm stays Friday at 2pm, it just shows up wearing "like, totally."

I also told it not to make the speaker sound dim. Valley talk is a style. It's not a joke about the girl who talks that way.

From Plain Talk to Totally Valley

Step 1: Mine started with a traffic moan. Any dull line works, and honestly the duller the better.

Step 2: Translate. Then a beat, maybe two, while it hunts for the right spot to stick a "totally."

Step 3: Say it back like you're on a payphone outside the Galleria in '83. A "like" somewhere odd? Gone.

Step 4: Birthday cards are the sweet spot, scrunchie doodle and all. Whoever gets one will bring it up for years.

Example Conversions

Straight from the tool, inputs typed how people really text:

  • ugh this traffic is so bad, i'm gonna be late again → Ugh, this traffic is like sooo grody, I'm totally gonna be late again, for sure?
  • the cafeteria food today was really disgusting → The cafeteria food today was like, totally grody, ugh, seriously?
  • Our meeting has been moved to Friday at 2pm. → Our meeting is like, totally moved to Friday at 2 pm, for sure?

Common Questions

What does "gag me with a spoon" mean? Gross. It's the 1982 way of pretending something's so nasty you might throw up, and Moon Zappa says she made it up herself.

What's Valspeak? Short for Valleyspeak. It's just another name for how Valley Girls talked. These days you mostly hear it in old movies and on throwback party playlists.

Is the Valley Girl accent real? Kind of. Uptalk and vocal fry are real, and people who study speech have looked at both. Still, nobody talked as thick as the movies made out.

Do I have to pay? Like, totally not. No account, no card, no catch.

Can I tone it down? Cut a few words by hand. Run a shorter sentence and you'll usually get a lighter version anyway.

Why's my answer different every time? It's random on purpose. The model picks between grody, gross and gag-me each time, so a second press can land funnier.

Where It Actually Gets Used

80s theme parties, mostly. Also drama class scripts and the odd birthday card for that friend who still owns a pair of leg warmers. For anything sent to a boss, maybe keep the "fer sure" to yourself, and if you need another voice entirely, there's a whole shelf on the translators page.
